Funny how little it takes to break me. One day I'll figure out why
that is. In the meantime, I sent the Vegas chapters to my agent, who
said he liked them... then suggested rewriting it in third person
point of view. A minor change you might think, but actually it
changes everything. I'm taking a few days off.

Woohoo! I just finished the third chapter of my Vegas P.I. book. I
feel great! This is the story I was meant to write- it's flowing so
well. Now I have to do the hard part, which is the synopsis of the
whole story. Not fun for us seat of the pants types, but a necessary
evil for getting the book sold.

I just got off the phone with my editor. She LOVED my last
manuscript! She said I did an amazing job, that 9 1/2 DAYS was
moving, touching and that it's one of her favorite books! I am so
relieved! I was worried that I'd have to tone down the hero's
scenes. But she said the September 11th subplot was well handled and
she didn't change a thing!

I just got home from a wonderful trip to Toronto. I had a great time
visiting the Toronto Romance Writers and also had a very positive
meeting with my editors. Harlequin really loved the idea I pitched
about a Las Vegas PI, so now I have to get a proposal together. I'm
so excited! More details about the idea when things are settled.

Not much going on right now. I'm just teaching online, arranging
local booksignings, designing websites, making travel plans,
preparing some workshops and starting the first book of a new series
idea. Ah, it's so nice to sit back and relax <VBG>

I just signed with literary agent Richard Curtis. Ack! I still can't believe it. THE Richard Curtis! And get this,
he loves my website! He called it 'unique and wonderful', said it was everything an author site should be.
THE Richard Curtis. I'm so over the moon you're gonna need the Hubble space telescope to see me <VBG>!

Thank goodness for CPs who can add! I was making myself crazy
thinking I'd only written 43,000 words on 91/2 DAYS when Lisa
pointed out that I was obsessing over the computer word count.
Harlequin uses a 250 word per page calculation... which puts me
closer to 49,000 words. Big difference with only twelve days left to
deadline!

RED SHOES was a Finalist for the Reviewers International
Organization Award of Excellence! What makes this nomination so cool
is that, unlike a contest, I didn't enter anything. Several book
reviewers liked my work enough to put this book forward. It's things
like this that keep me going in times of self-doubt.

After a two-hour chat session with my CP Lisa, she helped me see why
I'm having so much trouble with 9 1/2 Days. My heart wasn't in the
story. I needed to go back to the beginning and really dig down for
honest emotions and character motivations. I think this will be a
much better story now.

This week bears a suspicious resemblance to 2003- my husband is out
of town, I sprained my back shoveling snow, my grandmother is headed
back to the hospital and the power went out yesterday. Needless to
say, the writing has suffered :-(

I got the back cover blurb that will appear on Black Lace. The minor
mistakes were changed but not the rest of it. I guess all I can do
is pray for a beautiful front cover and great reviews so that
nobody bothers to read the back of the book.

The sound that you're hearing is my sigh of relief. I managed to
submit the partial manuscript for 9
1/2 DAYS today, thereby making my deadline with a mere four
hours to spare. I'm going to take it easy for the next day or so,
then get down to some serious work. My resolution for 2004 is to
concentrate on my writing. Let's just pray Life doesn't interfere
like it did last year...
